14 Wickets Fall on Day One as India Struggles in Mumbai Test

India is fighting to save face in the Mumbai Test, having already lost the first two matches of the three-match series. To avoid a whitewash, they must win the third and final Test, prompting the hosts to prepare a spin-friendly pitch similar to that in Pune.

On the first day, 14 wickets fell, with New Zealand being bowled out for 235 runs. In response, India started the final session well, but a series of mistakes saw them collapse from 78 for 1 to 86 for 5 by the end of the day, leaving them 149 runs behind. Shubman Gill will resume on 31 runs and Rishabh Pant on 1.

Batting first, New Zealand struggled against the spinners, with only Will Young and Daryl Mitchell showing resilience. Young scored 71 runs off 134 balls with 4 fours and 2 sixes, while Mitchell contributed 82 runs off 129 balls, hitting 3 fours and 3 sixes. Opener Tom Latham added 28 runs, but the rest of the batting lineup faltered, with no one else reaching 20.

For the hosts, spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar combined to take 9 wickets, with Jadeja claiming 5 for 65 and Washington taking 4 for 81

In India’s innings, Rohit Sharma started aggressively but could only manage 18 runs before being caught off Matt Henry. Fellow opener Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 30 runs before being bowled by Ajaz Patel. Virat Kohli was run out for 4 runs, and Mohammad Siraj, acting as the night-watchman, was dismissed Ibw on his first ball. Ajaz Patel took 2 wickets for New Zealand, with Matt Henry adding one.
