In the unofficial semifinal of the Asia Cup against Pakistan, Bangladesh’s defeat left Wasim Akram disappointed. The Pakistani legend said he could not figure out why Bangladesh lost.
On Thursday at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Bangladesh restricted Pakistan to 135 runs but failed to chase down the simple target of 136 due to batting failures. Bangladesh lost by 11 runs, and Pakistan advanced to the final.
After the match, Wasim Akram told the media, “It was batting that let Bangladesh down. They played poor shots. At the same time, Bangladesh really missed captain Liton Das. He was in great form. The injury he picked up was unfortunate. That’s where Bangladesh lost.”
After the game, Bangladesh head coach Phil Simmons also said, “We are still not the kind of team that can fill the gap when we lose our captain. Losing an in-form batsman like Liton was a big blow for us. Unlike other teams, we don’t have that depth.”
Simmons added, “Saif Hassan has definitely been the biggest positive of this tournament. And throughout the tournament, our bowlers have performed brilliantly.”
With Bangladesh bowing out, for the first time in Asia Cup history an India–Pakistan final has been confirmed. The two archrivals will face off in Dubai on Sunday.
