India Announces Squad for ICC Champions Trophy with a Few Surprises

The wait is finally over as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the squad for the ICC Champions Trophy. Despite injury concerns, Jasprit Bumrah has made the team, and Mohammed Shami has returned, as expected.

Rohit Sharma will lead the Indian team in the eight-team tournament, set to take place in Pakistan and the UAE. Shubman Gill has been named vice-captain. India will kick off their campaign on February 20 against Bangladesh.

While there are concerns about Bumrah’s back injury, India has decided to include their key pacer. However, Bumrah will be rested for the ongoing series against England to manage his workload. In the Champions Trophy, he will be partnered by Mohammed Shami and Arshdeep Singh in the pace department. The team management has also included multiple spinners.

All-rounders Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja bring experience to the squad. The batting lineup will feature Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and youngsters like Yashasvi Jaiswal. Wicketkeeping duties will be handled by Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul, as India has included two wicketkeepers. Notably, Mohammed Siraj missed out on selection.

India’s group-stage matches will all be played at neutral venues in the hybrid model tournament, which is hosted by Pakistan. After facing Bangladesh on February 20, India will take on arch-rivals Pakistan on February 23, followed by a match against New Zealand on March 2.
