Abhishek Sharma’s explosive century powered India to a dominant 150-run victory over England in the fifth and final T20 international at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, sealing the series 4-1. Sharma’s breathtaking 135 off just 54 balls, studded with 13 sixes, propelled India to a mammoth 247-9 after they were put in to bat.
England’s chase faltered early and never recovered, despite a rapid 55 from Phil Salt. The tourists struggled against both pace and spin, eventually succumbing for just 97 in 10.3 overs. Mohammed Shami was India’s most successful bowler, taking three wickets, while Sharma also contributed with two wickets in his solitary over of left-arm spin.
The foundation of India’s imposing total was laid by Sharma’s explosive innings. He and Tilak Varma (who also played a supporting role) shared a crucial 115-run partnership for the second wicket. Sharma reached his half-century in a mere 17 balls and his century in just 37, demonstrating his clean hitting and aggressive intent.
While other Indian batsmen chipped in with valuable runs, it was Sharma’s innings that truly defined the match. His ability to find the boundary with regularity put immense pressure on the England bowlers, and they had no answers to his onslaught.
England’s batting performance was a stark contrast to Sharma’s fireworks. They struggled to build partnerships and lost wickets at regular intervals. The early loss of key batsmen, including captain Jos Buttler, hampered their chase significantly.
India’s comprehensive victory underlined their dominance in the series. They won the first two matches, and although England briefly threatened a comeback, India’s strong performances in the crucial fourth and fifth matches ensured their series win.
With the T20 series concluded, the two teams now turn their attention to the three-match ODI series, which begins on February 6th. Both sides will be looking to fine-tune their preparations ahead of the Champions Trophy in Pakistan and Dubai.
