Tamim Iqbal, Shakib Al Hasan, and Mashrafe Bin Mortaza—these names will forever be etched in gold in the history of Bangladesh cricket. However, having such towering figures in the team comes with its own challenges. At times, their individual personas become larger than the team itself in the eyes of their fans. Tamim has strongly criticized this and has called for an end to such divisions for the sake of the team.
Even in the 2024 BPL, the rivalry between two of these cricketing greats left a lasting impact. The clash between these two national icons has completely divided the fans. Tamim Iqbal pointed out that, at the end of the day, this is harmful to Bangladesh cricket.
That is why, in his farewell message, he urged fans to rise above these narrow identities and support the country first. He stated, “There is no such thing as a Tamimian, Shakibian, or Mashrafian. Everyone is a supporter of Bangladesh.”
Tamim did not shy away from acknowledging that this division has negatively impacted the team’s cricket. He said, “This (being a fan of individual players over the team) has destroyed Bangladesh cricket. These things are ruining the younger generation! Please stop this!”
The greatest opener in Bangladesh’s history further added, “You can be my fan, you can be Shakib’s fan, you can be Mashrafe’s fan, but when the team plays, be a supporter of Bangladesh.”
“Please support the young team. They will make mistakes, but support them because this is your team. Please stay united.”
