South Africa’s Heinrich Klaasen is in phenomenal form. However, he doesn’t want to stop here. His goal is even bigger now—he wants to establish himself as the best batsman in the world in the Champions Trophy.
He was in a similar rhythm during the last ODI World Cup, ruthlessly punishing bowlers. At that time, commentator Ramiz Raja had even dubbed him ‘Hulagu Khan.’
Klaasen has continued his excellent form in this year’s Champions Trophy as well. He has come to the crease in two matches and scored two half-centuries. This wicketkeeper-batsman has now scored five consecutive fifties in his last five matches. Currently, he holds the fourth position in the ICC ODI batsmen’s rankings. On Saturday, he played a crucial knock of 64 runs off 56 balls against England, helping South Africa secure a seven-wicket victory and advance to the Champions Trophy semifinals.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Klaasen said, “I have taken on a challenge with (South Africa’s head coach) Rob Walter on this tour. I want to be the best in the world.”
He further added, “I know I can read situations well, and for me, it’s important to keep the ball on the ground as much as possible, just as I did tonight.”
“I’m quite satisfied with my innings today… staying at the crease and believing in my technique. I know I have a good bat swing, so when it clicks, I feel very happy.”
Since winning the ICC Champions Trophy (then called the Knockout World Cup) in 1998, South Africa has failed to secure an ICC title. Klaasen not only wants to dominate world cricket but also put an end to their 27-year-long title drought.
