In August last year, former national team captain Faruque Ahmed took over as the president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), succeeding Nazmul Hassan Papon, who had held the position for over a decade. Whenever the Bangladesh national team underperformed in a global tournament, Papon would talk about hopes for the next one, which led to frequent trolling with phrases like “We will do well in the next World Cup.”
However, the current BCB president, Faruque Ahmed, does not share the same belief in future World Cups without proper planning. After Bangladesh’s disastrous performance in the Champions Trophy, the board now wants to proceed with a well-structured plan, according to Faruque.
Yesterday, while inaugurating the third-division selection process in Mirpur, Faruque spoke about the national team’s future:
“I don’t believe in the next World Cup. When I was a selector in the 2007 World Cup, players like Tamim, Shakib, Mahmudullah, and Mushfiq came into the limelight. The board will provide a policy; we will decide what we want. We will discuss with Cricket Operations and think about how to take our cricket forward. If I compare with the past 12 years, I have not even completed six months in this role yet. There are many things I cannot accomplish in such a short time. However, we will try to work on this and move in that direction.”
