India is keen to host the Olympic Games in its own country, with its target set on the 2036 Olympics. To move one step closer to that dream, India has now expressed interest in hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games. According to a recent report by Qatar-based media outlet Al Jazeera, India has formally taken steps toward securing the hosting rights.
As per the report, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has officially submitted an “Expression of Interest” to the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF). IOA President PT Usha stated, “We have submitted an expression of interest, and we are hopeful that the Commonwealth Games Federation will consider our proposal.”
India previously hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2010 in New Delhi. Although there were allegations of corruption and mismanagement at the time, these issues did not affect the event itself, which was successfully completed. The games, which cost over $6 billion (approximately 720.8 billion Bangladeshi taka), were centered around Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
Securing the hosting rights for the Commonwealth Games would help India accelerate its journey toward achieving its ultimate goal—the 2036 Olympic Games. India has ambitious plans centered around the city of Ahmedabad in Gujarat, which is expected to play a crucial role in fulfilling its vision of hosting the world’s greatest sporting event. Successfully organizing the Commonwealth Games would serve as a significant milestone in India’s path to hosting the Olympics in 2036.
