Shoaib Malik has stepped down from his role as a mentor with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), citing personal commitments as the reason. The former Pakistan captain had been appointed as one of five mentors by the PCB in August last year. He submitted his resignation to the board a couple of weeks ago, despite having two years remaining on his contract. Malik had joined the role with a monthly salary of 500,000 Pakistani rupees.
According to Malik, he made the decision because he could no longer give sufficient time to the team due to his personal engagements.
In his words, “It wasn’t an easy decision to make. But considering my other commitments, I felt that trying to manage Pakistan cricket along with my other responsibilities and personal priorities would prevent me from giving my best in any area.”
Malik felt this was the right time to step away from his PCB duties. He also mentioned that he found satisfaction in working with the board over the past year, especially because of his strong relationship with young cricketers, with whom he enjoyed working.
The former captain said, “To remain fair to everyone, I felt this was the right time for a transition. Working with some of Pakistan’s most talented cricketers has been a truly fulfilling experience, one I will always cherish.”
With Shoaib Malik’s resignation, the number of PCB mentors is now down to four — Waqar Younis, Saqlain Mushtaq, Misbah-ul-Haq, and Sarfaraz Ahmed. These mentors are working under a three-year contract set to expire in August 2026.
