In the Galle Test, Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto made history by scoring centuries in both innings. He scored 148 runs in the first innings and remained unbeaten on 125 in the second. With this remarkable feat, Shanto has etched his name into the history books as the first Bangladeshi captain to achieve centuries in both innings of a Test match.
Not only that, Shanto also became the first Bangladeshi cricketer to score centuries in both innings of a Test match twice. He first achieved this in 2023 against Afghanistan in Mirpur. Globally, Shanto is now the 16th Test captain to score centuries in both innings of a match and the 15th player overall in Test history to do it twice.
Shanto’s achievement stands out even more because it came outside Bangladesh, in Galle, Sri Lanka. Previously, all such Bangladeshi double-century feats occurred at home. This time, the Tiger captain’s twin tons came on foreign soil, making it extra special.
He dominated the Sri Lankan bowlers with authority and added his name to an elite list. Among Asian captains, only five others have scored centuries in both innings of a Test: Dhananjaya de Silva, Sunil Gavaskar, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Virat Kohli, and Misbah-ul-Haq. Now, Bangladesh’s Test captain Shanto has joined this prestigious club.
