For the first time in Bangladesh’s history, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto has scored centuries in both innings of a Test match. He made 148 runs in the first innings and remained unbeaten on 125 in the second. But the Galle Test brought another historic first for Bangladesh cricket.
It was the first time a Bangladeshi pair registered century partnerships in both innings of a Test. Mushfiqur Rahim and Shanto, batting together for the fourth wicket, reached triple figures in both innings. Their partnership yielded 264 runs in the first innings and 109 runs in the second.
In Test history, Bangladesh has recorded 106 century partnerships. They’ve also seen as many as three century stands in a single match on six occasions. In the Galle Test, there were three such partnerships: two between Mushfiqur and Najmul, and one between Mushfiqur and Liton in the first innings.
However, no Bangladeshi pair had ever reached 100 runs together in both innings of a match until Mushfiqur and Najmul.
The first instance of twin-century stands in Test cricket dates back to 1924. Back then, England’s Jack Hobbs and Herbert Sutcliffe put together 157 runs in the first innings and 110 in the second as openers against Australia in Sydney.
