Sourav Ganguly holds a significant place in the history of Indian cricket. He was once the captain of the Indian national team. Later, he served as the President of the BCCI. He has also worked as the Team Director of Delhi Capitals in multiple IPL seasons. Now, he has expressed his interest in taking up the role of India’s head coach. Not only as a captain but also as a player, his statistics are quite impressive. Yet, Ganguly admits he is not fully satisfied with his career.
He scored 38 centuries in international cricket — a number that could have been higher. Ganguly still regrets this. In a recent interview, the former Indian captain and cricket administrator opened up about this lingering disappointment. He scored 18,575 runs in 311 ODIs and 113 Tests.
Ganguly said, “I missed many centuries. I got out in the 80s and 90s several times.”
Statistics show that the former left-handed batter was dismissed 30 times between scores of 80 and 99. If he had managed to convert even 15 of those into centuries, his total could have reached 53 centuries.
He now watches videos of his missed centuries and feels regret. “When I’m alone, I watch those videos. I go to YouTube and see the old matches. I watch how many times I got out in the 70s — which could have been hundreds. But I can’t change it now,” said Ganguly.
He scored 72 fifties in ODIs and 35 in Tests. Ganguly mentioned that his favorite opponent was Australia, and his favorite bowler was Glenn McGrath.
As a captain, he led the Indian national team to win the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy (joint winners) and to reach the finals of the 2003 World Cup, the 2000 ICC Champions Trophy, and the 2004 Asia Cup. In his ODI career, he scored 11,363 runs, placing him ninth on the list of all-time highest ODI run-scorers globally.
