“We Still Have a Lot of Work to Do Before the World Cup” — Sumon

Bangladesh’s T20 series win at the end of their tour of Sri Lanka is undoubtedly an inspiring achievement. After disappointing performances in the Test and ODI series, this victory has brought a ray of hope amid the gloom. However, former national team captain Habibul Bashar Sumon has issued a clear warning: this win must not lead to complacency. To succeed on the grand stage of the World Cup, there is still a long way to go.

Speaking to the media, Sumon said bluntly,
“To do well, we must correct the mistakes we’ve made in previous series. Just because we won this series doesn’t mean everything is now perfect. We believe there’s still a lot of hard work left to do. We have a lot to prepare before the World Cup.”

For Bangladesh, this series win is not just a statistical success — it’s a confidence booster. Especially the performance and leadership of captain Litton Das answered many questions.

With the T20 World Cup approaching, the pressure in every match will only increase. As Sumon warned:
“If we start thinking that everything is fine, we’ll be making a big mistake.”
The way Bangladesh played in the last two matches against Sri Lanka was commendable, but without consistency, such performances may fade. As Sumon emphasized:
“If we keep playing this brand of cricket, I won’t mind losing. But it’s crucial to maintain the momentum.”

Even as Bangladesh celebrate this historic win over the Lankans, another challenge awaits. After just a two-day break, they face Pakistan in a three-match T20 series — a stronger opponent and a tougher challenge. Team manager Nafis Iqbal has already issued a reminder:
“The game isn’t over yet.”

This victory against the Lankans feels like a new beginning for the Bangladesh team. Expressing his joy, BCB director Iftekhar Rahman Mithu said,
“As a Bengali, I feel immense pride. Going into the World Cup, confidence is everything — and a win like this reignites that confidence.”
