CID to Help Prevent Fixing in the BPL

To prevent serious corruption such as match-fixing in the upcoming Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has taken strong monitoring measures. In the last BPL, seven players suspected of match-fixing were excluded from the auction. This list included Anamul Haque Bijoy and Mosaddek Hossain. With the aim of preventing any kind of corruption from entering the franchise league in the future, the BCB has taken a new initiative. The board has decided to appoint members of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to each team in the next season. For this purpose, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) will be signed with the CID, confirmed BCB vice president Sakhawat Hossain. He shared this information with the media on Sunday (30 November) after the BPL auction.

Regarding assigning CID officials to the franchises, Sakhawat said,
“To ensure transparency in the game, we have taken a new initiative. Our integrity unit will remain, and along with that, we are going to sign an MoU with the CID of Bangladesh Police. Two CID officers will be assigned to each team—one in uniform and one in plain clothes.”

Speaking about CID’s capabilities in preventing fixing, he said,
“CID is the most advanced criminal investigation agency in the country. They have modern technology. If needed, they can even analyze WhatsApp conversations. They have all kinds of equipment. We want to work in coordination with the government to maintain transparency in the game and to avoid any questions about our sincerity.”

Notably, the 12th edition of the BPL will begin on December 26 in Sylhet. Before that, the opening ceremony will be held on December 24 in Mirpur.
