Habibul Bashar Sumon, the head of the women’s wing of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), expressed his determination to win the upcoming women’s cricket series against Ireland 3-0. Speaking at the sponsorship announcement ceremony of the series in Mirpur, Sumon highlighted the significance of this series in securing a direct spot in the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup, which will be held in India in 2025.
“Our primary goal is to win this series 3-0. Playing at home gives us a significant advantage. With the World Cup being held in the subcontinent, our team is quite confident. We want to capitalize on this opportunity and fulfill our dream of playing in the World Cup. Our next series is against the West Indies, but that’s a matter for later. Our focus is now on the Ireland series,” said Sumon.
The BCB has also undertaken several initiatives to promote women’s cricket. Fahim, another official, mentioned that senior national women’s cricketers will visit schools and colleges to encourage more girls to take up the sport. Additionally, the board plans to increase the number of leagues and matches.
“We want our women cricketers to get at least 40-50 match opportunities per year. If we can achieve this, the standard of women’s cricket will improve rapidly. We can build a better team in the future,” said Fahim.
To secure a direct spot in the World Cup, the Bangladesh women’s team must whitewash Ireland 3-0 in the ODI series. If they achieve this target, they will avoid the qualifying round.
