Islamabad is in turmoil due to political protests demanding the release of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and the resignation of the government. Amid this unrest, Sri Lanka’s ‘A’ team has decided to leave Pakistan before completing their series.
The Sri Lankan ‘A’ team was touring Pakistan to play a three-match ODI series against Pakistan Shaheens. In the first match, the hosts secured a commanding 108-run victory. However, ahead of the second match, Islamabad became engulfed in protests, forcing the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to cancel Tuesday’s (November 26) second match. Citing security concerns, Sri Lanka decided to bring their players back home.
In a statement, the PCB announced that the series has been postponed indefinitely, and the cricket boards of both nations are discussing rescheduling options.
This incident has further amplified concerns about Pakistan’s ability to host international tournaments. India has already expressed reluctance to participate in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan due to security concerns, leaving the tournament’s future in doubt. The fate of the Champions Trophy will be discussed at an ICC meeting on Friday.
Initially, the second match was scheduled for Wednesday and the third for Friday in Rawalpindi. Despite multiple discussions and assurances about security, Sri Lankan cricket authorities opted to prioritize player safety and withdrew their team midway through the series.
