In the final group-stage match of the U-19 Asia Cup, Bangladesh fell short against Sri Lanka, losing a thrilling encounter by 7 runs. Chasing a target of 229 runs at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Azizul Hakim’s team was bowled out for 221, missing the chance to top their group. However, having won their first two group matches, Bangladesh advanced to the semifinals as runners-up.
Sri Lanka, opting to bat first after winning the toss, struggled initially, losing their top three batters quickly. But at number four, Vimath Dinsara anchored the innings with a brilliant century. He scored 106 runs off 10 boundaries before being bowled by Al Fahad. While the subsequent batters couldn’t contribute significantly, Sri Lanka managed a competitive total of 228 before being all out in 49.2 overs. Al Fahad claimed 4 wickets for 50 runs, while Rizan Hossain picked up 3 wickets for Bangladesh.
In response, Bangladesh started well with an opening partnership of 52 runs between Jawad Abrar and Kalam Siddique. After Jawad was run out for 24, Kalam continued to lead the chase with a composed knock. He was on the verge of a century but fell for 95 while attempting a reverse sweep. His innings, which included 8 boundaries and 1 six, had kept Bangladesh in contention.
However, the rest of the batting lineup failed to capitalize on his efforts. Despite contributions from Debashish Debar (31) and an unbeaten 24 from Farid Hasan, Bangladesh fell agonizingly short. For Sri Lanka, Vihas Thimuka was the standout bowler, claiming 3 wickets.
With this result, Bangladesh, the defending champions, will now face a crucial semifinal battle in their quest to retain the title.
