Former Bangladesh national team captain Aminul Islam Bulbul has been appointed as the new president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). He received approval from the National Sports Council (NSC) as a BCB director. On Friday (May 30), Bulbul — Bangladesh’s first Test centurion — was elected as the new president through a vote by the BCB directors. He has now become the 16th president of the BCB.
Additionally, Nazmul Abedin Fahim has been elected as the Senior Vice President, and another director, Fahim Sinha, has become Vice President. Following the political change on August 5 last year, new leadership took over the BCB. Faruque became a BCB director as an NSC councillor, and later, on August 21, he was elected president through the directors’ vote. However, his tenure lasted only 10 months.
On Thursday (May 29), eight BCB directors sent a letter to the Ministry of Youth and Sports expressing no-confidence in Faruque Ahmed. Following this, the National Sports Council withdrew Faruque’s nomination. As a result, the vacant position was filled today with Aminul Islam Bulbul being nominated as an NSC-appointed director. Subsequently, he was elected as the new president through a board meeting vote by the BCB directors.
There is speculation that the new president might serve as an interim leader until the BCB elections in October, making his term around four months long. After that, new leadership will be chosen through elections.
Now, Aminul returns to Bangladesh cricket in a new role. At a critical time for the country’s cricket, the responsibility of leading the board has fallen on his shoulders. He brings experience from coaching and working in the ICC’s game development division. However, working as a full-fledged cricket administrator is not his natural domain. But then again, Aminul is known for trying — he has strong willpower and determination. Whether he can bring about any meaningful change in this new role — only time will tell.
