To establish the political rights of the youth, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) organized a grand rally at the historic Polo Ground in Chattogram. Former captain of the Bangladesh national cricket team and Chattogram native, Tamim Iqbal, participated in the event.
Speaking at the rally on Saturday (May 10), Tamim expressed his disappointment regarding the current state of sports in Chattogram. He opined that in recent years, the region has failed to produce world-class athletes in cricket, football, and other sports.
Highlighting the neglect of Chattogram’s sporting infrastructure over the past 15 years, Tamim said, “At one time, there used to be 6–7 players from Chattogram in every national team. But in the last 15 years, barely one or two players from here have made it to the national level. It’s important to find out why this has happened.”
He expressed hope that this situation would change in the future.
The rally, titled “Youth’s Right to Political Representation”, began Saturday afternoon at the historic Polo Ground in Chattogram. It was jointly organized by three BNP affiliated wings — Jubo Dal (Youth Wing), Chhatra Dal (Student Wing), and Swechchhasebak Dal (Volunteer Wing).
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir attended the grand rally as the chief guest. Member of the BNP Standing Committee Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury also joined the event, while the party’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman participated virtually from London.
