Although Bangladesh won the ODI series 2–1 against the West Indies in Mirpur, they fell behind early in the T20 series after losing the opening match in Chattogram.
On Wednesday, at the Birshreshtha Matiur Rahman Stadium in Chattogram, the West Indies batted first after winning the toss and scored 149 runs for the loss of 9 wickets. Captain Shai Hope top-scored with 55 runs off 36 balls, hitting three fours and three sixes. Opener Alick Athanaze contributed 52 runs off 33 balls, including five fours and three sixes.
For Bangladesh, Mustafizur Rahman took 3 wickets for 21 runs in 4 overs, while Rishad Hossain claimed 2 wickets for 20 runs, and Nasum Ahmed picked up 2 wickets for 35 runs.
To keep the series alive, Bangladesh must chase 150 runs in 120 balls. Otherwise, the Caribbean side will seal the series with one match to spare.
Batting first after losing the toss, the West Indies lost opener Brandon King for just 1 run, dismissed by Taskin Ahmed. Then captain Shai Hope took charge, forming a destructive partnership with opener Alick Athanaze. Together, they added 105 runs off 59 balls for the second wicket, taking the game away from Bangladesh.
It looked like the West Indies might cross the 200-run mark, but Bangladesh’s bowlers managed to pull things back in the 12th over. At 106 for 1 (in 11.2 overs), Athanaze was dismissed by Nasum Ahmed after scoring 52 runs from 33 balls with 5 fours and 3 sixes.
Next batter Sherfane Rutherford was bowled for a golden duck, giving Nasum two wickets in two balls. Shai Hope, who had been leading the batting charge, was later dismissed by Mustafizur Rahman.
In the first match of the series, the West Indies scored 165 runs and won by 16 runs. If they win today’s match, they will secure the series victory.
