With the Champions Trophy just a month away, teams around the world are finalizing their squads. Bangladesh is no exception, but the team faces a significant question: Will Shakib Al Hasan be available for the tournament?
Both Shakib and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) have expressed interest in his participation. However, the situation is more complicated now. BCB President Faruk Ahmed has clarified that the final decision about Shakib’s inclusion will not rest solely with the board.
The complications arise from Shakib’s involvement in politics. In the 2024 national elections, Shakib was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Magura-1 constituency under the Awami League banner. However, following the government’s fall in the July uprising, Shakib lost his MP status and has since been staying abroad, like many other Awami League leaders.
This political situation prevented Shakib from playing his farewell Test at home and has also kept him out of the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). However, the Champions Trophy, being held outside Bangladesh in Pakistan and the UAE, does not pose the same complications, raising hopes within the BCB for his return.
Faruk Ahmed commented, “The Champions Trophy is being held abroad, so it’s a valid question whether Shakib can play. We need to discuss this with the selectors during the BPL.”
He added, “Shakib hasn’t officially retired. If he had, this discussion wouldn’t be happening. The selectors seek guidance from us before forming a team. We will make one last attempt to include Shakib before the Champions Trophy and will consult with the relevant ministries about his participation.”
Shakib himself is reportedly in talks with government officials to resolve his issues. Faruk mentioned, “Shakib occasionally speaks to the ministries about finding a solution. If he can clear up his complications with government support, a decision can be made.”
Even if Shakib receives the green light from the government, questions about his form and fitness remain. Faruk emphasized, “The selectors will assess his fitness, mental state, and other factors before making a decision.”
Shakib’s effectiveness has been a concern since he developed vision issues that have impacted his batting. Additionally, changes to his bowling action have raised questions about his capability as a bowler. His mental state has also been under scrutiny, especially after he missed the West Indies series for personal reasons.
Even if political and administrative barriers are removed, Shakib’s readiness to contribute at the required level remains uncertain, leaving his participation in the Champions Trophy in doubt.
