The organizers of Australia’s popular Big Bash League (BBL) are planning to introduce a new rule where two batsmen can be dismissed off a single ball. This change is being considered to make the tournament more exciting and engaging, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.
Two Dismissals in One Ball
Under the current rules, during a run-out situation, only the batsman at the end where the stumps are broken is dismissed if they are outside their crease. However, under the proposed rule, if the fielding team manages to break the stumps at both ends with both batsmen outside their respective creases, both will be declared run out.
This rule aims to capitalize on moments of miscommunication between batsmen during runs, adding a new layer of drama to the game.
Automatic Dismissal for Consecutive Dot Balls
Another idea under consideration is that a batsman could be declared out if they fail to score for six consecutive deliveries. This rule would encourage aggressive batting and reduce the number of slow-paced innings, ensuring the game remains fast and entertaining.
Extended Bowling Spells
Currently, bowlers can bowl a maximum of one over (six balls) at a time. However, the new proposal would allow bowlers to bowl up to 12 consecutive deliveries (two overs). Teams could use this option twice in a match, adding tactical depth to their gameplay.
Status of the Proposed Rules
These ideas are still at the proposal stage and have not yet been implemented. If they come into effect, cricket fans will witness a significant shift in the dynamics of the game, setting the Big Bash League apart with its innovative approach to cricket.
