Dewald Brevis’ Six Makes a Spectator a Millionaire

A spectator grabbed headlines during the opening match of South Africa’s T20 franchise league by catching a six and winning nearly 15 million Bangladeshi Taka. The lucky fan secured the prize by catching a six hit by Dewald Brevis.

According to the tournament rules, any spectator who catches a six cleanly with one hand wins 2 million South African Rand, which is approximately 13,070,025 Bangladeshi Taka. To qualify, the catch must be clean—meaning the ball cannot bounce off any surface, another person, or even any part of the catcher’s own body. The ball must be caught on the first attempt without any juggling. Additionally, the spectator must be at least 18 years old to be eligible for the prize.

The opening match took place on Tuesday at St George’s Park in Gqeberha, where MI Cape Town faced the Paarl Royals. Batting first, MI Cape Town posted a competitive total of 199/4.

Dewald Brevis remained unbeaten on 44 runs off 30 balls, hitting four sixes. One of his sixes led to the lucky spectator’s million-dollar catch. The fan was spotted wearing an MI Cape Town jersey. Ryan Rickelton also contributed 44 runs off 27 balls, while Rassie van der Dussen scored 40 off 32. Towards the end of the innings, Delano Potgieter played a quick cameo, smashing 32 runs off just 17 balls.

Chasing 200, the Paarl Royals were bowled out for 160 in 19.4 overs. Captain David Miller top-scored for his team with 46 off 26 balls.
