Everyone is disappointed with Bangladesh’s performance in the Champions Trophy. The senior players’ performances are under heavy criticism. Now, former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram has joined the chorus of criticism.
Commenting on Mahmudullah Riyad’s fielding, the Pakistani legend said that he looked like he had come on vacation. A dependable batter, Mahmudullah scored only 4 runs off 14 balls against New Zealand. He was caught by Will O’Rourke while attempting to hit a boundary off Mitchell Bracewell’s delivery.
Speaking to Pakistani media about the Champions Trophy, the former Pakistan captain said, “That was a straightforward catch. Mahmudullah looked like he was on vacation. Now, he is neither performing with the bat nor contributing with the ball.”
In the must-win match against New Zealand, Bangladesh was at 97 for 2 at one stage after losing the toss and batting first. However, Towhid Hridoy, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Mahmudullah all lost their wickets within six overs. All three fell to Michael Bracewell’s off-spin, and each dismissal was essentially a gift.
Mushfiqur and Mahmudullah’s dismissals due to poor shot selection have sparked severe criticism. However, the captain has a different perspective.
Najmul Hossain Shanto stated, “I don’t want to single out the two senior players. I believe we, as a team, didn’t play well in this match. It’s not that we have higher expectations just because they are senior players. Our entire batting group didn’t perform well.”
