Bangladesh started the series with a loss but bounced back in the second ODI to level it. That made the third and final ODI a series decider. In this high-stakes clash, Sri Lanka posted a big total, thanks to a brilliant century from Kusal Mendis. The Tigers now need 286 runs to clinch the series.
On Tuesday (July 8) in Pallekele, Sri Lankan captain Charith Asalanka won the toss and opted to bat first. However, Bangladesh struck early as pacer Tanzim Hasan Sakib dismissed Nishan Madushka for just 1 run off 6 balls, with the team total on 13.
Kusal Mendis then joined Pathum Nissanka to steady the innings. The pair added 56 runs before Nissanka was dismissed by Tanvir Islam for 35 off 47 balls. Kamindu Mendis came in next but failed to make a big impact, falling for 16 off 20 balls to Mehidy Hasan Miraz.
Kusal Mendis held one end firmly and brought up his fifty. He was well supported by captain Asalanka, who rotated the strike effectively. Asalanka reached his fifty in 60 balls, while Mendis played a superb knock, reaching his century off 95 balls—his sixth ODI century and second against Bangladesh. The duo stitched together a vital 124-run stand.
At the team score of 224, Asalanka was dismissed for 58 off 68. After that, Sri Lanka lost three wickets in quick succession—Janith Liyanage (12), Dunith Wellalage (6), and finally, Kusal Mendis, who scored 124 off 114 balls.
In the end, Wanindu Hasaranga (18* off 14) and Dushmantha Chameera (10* off 8) added useful runs to take Sri Lanka to 285 for 7 in 50 overs.
For Bangladesh, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Taskin Ahmed claimed two wickets each.
To win the match and the series, Bangladesh now need 286 runs.
