English champions Liverpool have permanently retired the No. 20 jersey in honor of Portuguese striker Diogo Jota, who tragically passed away in a car accident in Spain. Jota wore the No. 20 shirt during his time with the Reds.
The club made the decision after consulting with Jota’s wife, Rute Cardoso, and other family members. In an official statement, Liverpool said,
“As a tribute to Diogo and to honor his memory, the No. 20 jersey will be retired at all levels of the club. This decision will not only apply to the men’s team, but also to the women’s team and the entire academy.”
The statement further added,
“This decision not only recognizes the outstanding contribution our Portuguese star made over the past five years to the success of the team, but also the deep personal impact he had on his teammates, colleagues, and supporters. It is also a way to honor the lasting bonds he built with them.”
Michael Edwards, Football CEO of Liverpool’s ownership group Fenway Sports Group, said:
“As a club, we have been sensitive to the feelings of our supporters, and we felt the same ourselves. It was essential to involve Diogo’s wife, Rute, and his family in this decision. This is our special tribute to an exceptional and remarkable person. By retiring this squad number, we have made his legacy permanent.”
