The Rangpur Riders, who were previously known for their blue jerseys in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), have adopted a new red-and-green outfit as they prepare for the Global Super League in Guyana, West Indies. The team began its training sessions at Mirpur, where former star cricketer Mohammad Ashraful was present as the assistant coach. For the first time, Ashraful will step onto the field not as a player but as a coach. The former national team cricketer expressed his excitement about starting his coaching career.
After the training session, Ashraful said, “After retiring from cricket, I always wanted to stay connected to the game. I was supposed to work with Rangpur Riders in the last BPL but couldn’t. This year, I planned to start with BPL, but since Fortune Barishal isn’t participating in the Global Super League, I got the opportunity to go with Rangpur Riders. This is my first assignment as an assistant coach. I hope to use my playing and observation experience to help the team. Over the past one-and-a-half months, I’ve been working with kids at an academy. This is just the beginning for me. I aim to learn more, especially from Mickey Arthur, who will be the head coach.”
The Global Super League, featuring five franchise teams from five countries, will commence on November 26 in Guyana. Apart from Rangpur Riders from Bangladesh, the tournament will feature Guyana Amazon Warriors (Caribbean Premier League), Lahore Qalandars (Pakistan Super League), Hampshire Hawks (England’s T20 Blast), and Victoria (Sheffield Shield, Australia). The Rangpur Riders will be split into two squads for their arrival in the Caribbean.
Speaking about the tournament, Ashraful added, “This is a great opportunity for our players. It will be challenging, but I believe if our team performs well collectively and players deliver individually, we can aim for the final. Everyone wants to be champions, but our first goal is to reach the final.”
