Akram Khan is known as a director of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). To the whole nation, Akram Khan means the captain who led Bangladesh to the historic ICC Trophy victory in 1997. Before becoming a BCB director, he also served as the chief selector.
Ahead of the upcoming BCB elections, influential board director Mahbubul Anam had already announced that he would not take part. Now, Akram Khan has chosen the same path. He will not contest in the election scheduled for next month. A major reason behind Akram’s withdrawal is believed to be the candidacy of his nephew, Tamim Iqbal, who has decided to run in the elections.
Akram said, “I am not contesting this time. Tamim has already expressed his interest in the elections. He belongs to the next generation. More than one person from the same family should not be on the board. I have always kept myself away from controversies, and I want to remain that way.”
From the Chattogram division, two political figures are expected to join the BCB this time—one of them being Tamim. Political influence is becoming evident in this year’s BCB elections, beyond just the organizers. In most districts and divisions, politically affiliated individuals are likely to be elected as directors.
It is being reported that the BNP has already prepared a list of candidates. Meanwhile, at a recent event in Khulna, former BCB president Ali Asghar Lobi commented, “Tamim is the BNP’s candidate, and Aminul is the government’s.”
