Mushfiq-Mahmudullah Facing Questions, Need to Prove Themselves

Bangladesh’s journey in the Champions Trophy ended in disappointment as they were eliminated from the group stage without winning a single match. Despite reaching the semifinals in the previous edition, this time the Tigers failed to make an impact. Mushfiqur Rahim struggled with the bat, while Mahmudullah Riyad, who played only one match, also failed to score runs.

Given their age, questions are now being raised about the future of these two experienced cricketers in the national team. However, BCB director Akram Khan believes that the decision regarding their future should be left to them. The former Bangladesh captain spoke to the media at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla Stadium on Wednesday (March 5), where he addressed the situation of these senior players.

Akram Khan stated, “First of all, I believe that all senior players should be respected. Only the players themselves can assess their fitness and how they are handling the pressure of the game. A player knows best about his future. Considering everything, we should leave the decision to them. If needed, the team management and players should sit together and decide. I think discussing this matter publicly is not respectful.”

On Monday, after the BCB board meeting, Cricket Operations Chairman Nazmul Abedin Fahim was also questioned about Mushfiqur and Mahmudullah. Speaking to the media, he said, “I think they need to prove themselves—whether in terms of their age, fitness, or performance. But it’s not my call; it’s up to the selectors. It wouldn’t be appropriate for me to comment on this, but the competition will not be easy.”
