The South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) has issued a new statement regarding the SAFF Championship 2025. The 15th edition of the tournament was initially scheduled to take place this year. However, it has now been postponed. The federation has announced that the tournament will be held next year instead.
On Thursday (April 24), SAFF announced the new decision on its official website, stating that SAFF, its member countries, and Sportfive (the commercial rights holder) believe that more time is required to organize the event smoothly. As a result, this year’s SAFF Championship has been postponed and will now be held in 2026.
The last edition of South Asia’s premier football tournament was held in 2023 in Bengaluru, India. In that edition, host India defeated guest team Kuwait to claim the title. Following the tradition of a two-year gap between editions, the next SAFF Championship was due to be held this year.
So far, 14 editions of the SAFF Championship have been held. India has won the title a record 9 times, followed by the Maldives with 2 titles. Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka have each won it once.
