One of the finest batters of the modern era, Virat Kohli, has expressed his desire to retire from Test cricket. He has already informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) about his decision. However, senior officials at the BCCI have urged him to reconsider.
A BCCI source said, “He has made his decision and informed the board that he wants to step away from Test cricket. The BCCI has requested him to reconsider, especially with the upcoming England tour. He hasn’t responded yet.”
On Wednesday, Rohit Sharma officially announced his retirement from Test cricket. Now, Kohli seems to be heading in the same direction. India is set to tour England next month for a five-match Test series, with the first Test scheduled to begin on June 20 in Leeds. BCCI selectors are expected to meet soon to finalize the squad for the series.
Kohli has reportedly been contemplating his future in Tests since the Border-Gavaskar Trophy held in Australia between November and January. In that series, he scored 190 runs in 9 innings across five Tests at an average of 23.75, including a single century. Due to his lackluster performance, Kohli faced criticism during the series, which may have influenced his decision to step away from the format.
