Cristiano Ronaldo is facing the risk of suspension in next year’s FIFA World Cup. The Portuguese star could be banned for at least three matches.
Portugal had no option but to win against Ireland to secure World Cup qualification. With the team trailing 2–0 in this crucial moment, the incident occurred.
Cristiano Ronaldo landed himself in trouble after receiving a red card against Ireland. He is now facing a tough disciplinary decision.
In the 61st minute, during a clash with Dara O’Shea, Ronaldo lost control. He struck his opponent with a direct elbow. Referee Glenn Nyberg initially showed him a yellow card, but after reviewing the incident on VAR, the decision was changed to a direct red card. While leaving the pitch, Ronaldo showed visible anger—he sarcastically clapped at the referee and exchanged heated words with the crowd.
According to FIFA rules, this type of behavior is classified as “violent conduct.” FIFA’s disciplinary code states: “A minimum of a three-match suspension applies for hitting an opponent.” Therefore, the suspension will not be limited to Portugal’s final qualifier; Ronaldo could face even harsher penalties. If he receives a three-match ban, he will miss the match against Armenia and several other official fixtures.
The biggest concern is that if Portugal beat Armenia and qualify for the World Cup, this suspension could carry over into the 2026 World Cup itself—something extremely rare for players of Ronaldo’s stature.
At this point, it’s clear how many matches Ronaldo could miss. If FIFA categorizes the action as “violent conduct,” he will miss three matches. If considered “serious foul play,” he will miss at least two. If it is deemed an off-the-ball offense, the suspension could be even longer.
In any scenario, Ronaldo is likely to miss at least one or two matches. But given the current situation, part of his suspension may extend into the World Cup.
