The global popularity of franchise-based cricket leagues is on the rise, with the Indian Premier League (IPL) reigning supreme due to its massive financial backing, star-studded line-ups, and immense fan following. However, Saudi Arabia is now aiming to challenge this dominance with a new T20 league backed by a staggering $500 million budget.
Inspired by the Grand Slam format in tennis, this tournament will be held in four different countries each year. Former Australian cricketer and ex-Cricket Australia board member, Neil Maxwell, who also manages Australian captain Pat Cummins, is working on the project. The Saudi Arabian state-owned company, SRJ Sports Investments, is expected to invest approximately $606.9 million in this ambitious venture.
However, to proceed, the Saudi Cricket Authority will need approval from the International Cricket Council (ICC). Gaining the participation of Indian cricketers would require the consent of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), along with approval from Cricket Australia (CA). Ultimately, the decision rests with the current ICC president, Jay Shah.
