Bangladesh national team captain Najmul Hossain Shanto has admitted that leading in all three formats was becoming increasingly difficult for him. That’s why he informed the board that the job was not easy for him.
Although he was appointed until the 2025 Champions Trophy, that tenure has now ended. The BCB is looking for a new captain, but there is still a strong possibility that Shanto might continue in the role. However, whoever takes over as the new captain, Shanto has urged the board to ensure that the captain is given proper authority and importance.
Under Shanto’s leadership, Bangladesh has achieved several milestones, including their first-ever Test victory against New Zealand, ODI and T20 wins in New Zealand, and a Test series whitewash against Pakistan. However, the team faced pressure after a poor performance in the ODI series against India.
While his tenure was set until the 2025 Champions Trophy, the BCB has yet to announce any changes. Shanto emphasized that the next captain should be given a long-term role.
“I believe that whoever the captain is—whether it’s me or someone else—should be appointed for the long term. We are already talking about the 2027 World Cup. When the board selects a captain, they should place their trust in him,” Shanto said.
Regarding the freedom he had as captain, Shanto remarked, “I would say that 80 to 90 percent of the commitments made to me have been fulfilled.” His advice to the BCB is to maintain the same level of trust and authority for the next captain as well.
