Soumya Joins Shakib in ‘Golden Duck’ Record

Rangpur Riders have been performing impressively in the Global Super League (GSL), but Soumya Sarkar has been a major letdown. He has consistently failed with the bat. Now, he has added his name to an embarrassing record — alongside none other than Shakib Al Hasan.

Rangpur Riders had already secured a spot in the final before the end of the league stage, making their last group match a mere formality. In that inconsequential match held last night at Providence Stadium, Rangpur faced Central Districts.

After winning the toss, Rangpur opted to bat, but lost a wicket on just the second ball of the innings — Soumya Sarkar was dismissed. Attempting a big shot off Central spinner Angus Shey, he was caught at long-on by Matthew Ford. Getting out on the second ball of the innings meant it was a golden duck.

With this dismissal, Soumya set an unwanted record — he now tops the list for the most ducks (score of zero) by a Bangladeshi in recognized T20 matches. He shares this record with Shakib Al Hasan — both have been dismissed for zero 32 times.

Other notable names on this list include Imrul Kayes, Tamim Iqbal, and Mushfiqur Rahim. In recognized T20s, Imrul has 22 ducks, Tamim 20, and Mushfiq 19. But it’s safe to say that none of them are likely to catch up to Shakib and Soumya’s record.
