Soumya Sarkar had been sidelined due to injury but made his comeback in the recently concluded BPL. The selectors were hopeful of having him available for the Champions Trophy. However, ahead of the upcoming tournament, he has suffered another injury during practice.
On Monday (February 10), the cricketers took to the field for practice at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla Stadium. While batting in the center wicket, a delivery from pacer Mrittunjoy Chowdhury struck Soumya’s right-hand finger. The Tigers’ opener immediately collapsed in pain.
BCB physio Bayezidul Islam provided initial treatment. Shortly after, Soumya walked off to the dressing room. This fresh injury before the Champions Trophy is certainly a cause for concern for Bangladesh, as he had only recently recovered from an injury to the same finger. However, the severity of this new injury is yet to be determined.
Notably, the Bangladesh team is scheduled to leave for the Champions Trophy on February 13. Their campaign, led by Najmul Hossain Shanto, will begin on February 20 with a match against India.
