Tamim Iqbal, already a record-holder in Bangladeshi cricket, added another feather to his cap by becoming the first Bangladeshi player to reach the milestone of 8,000 runs in recognized T20 cricket. He achieved this landmark during his innings of 40 runs against Rangpur Riders in the ongoing BPL on Thursday.
Starting the match with 7,991 T20 runs, Tamim reached the milestone with a boundary off Mehidy Hasan in the fifth over of the innings. This accomplishment makes him not only the first Bangladeshi but also the 34th player in the world to score 8,000 runs in T20 cricket.
Although Tamim struggled early in his innings, scoring just 4 runs off his first 12 balls, he found his rhythm in the fifth over. However, his innings ended on 40 runs off 34 balls, which included 4 fours and 2 sixes. His contribution helped Barishal post a competitive total of 197/5.
Tamim reached this milestone in 272 matches and 271 innings. His overall T20 career tally now stands at 8,031 runs at an average of 32.91 and a strike rate of 121.27. The left-handed opener has also scored four centuries in the format.
Tamim has scored the majority of his T20 runs for the Bangladesh national team, amassing 1,701 runs. His second-highest tally of 977 runs came while playing for Barishal. In the history of the BPL, he has played 109 matches, scoring 3,583 runs with 2 centuries and 29 half-centuries.
Shakib Al Hasan follows Tamim as the second-highest run-scorer for Bangladesh in T20 cricket, with 7,438 runs to his name.
