Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal Khan has announced that he will run for the position of director in the upcoming Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) elections. However, this is not his ultimate goal. He has stated that if he receives sufficient support, he will also contest for the position of BCB president.
Tamim has not worn the national team jersey since 2023. In January of this year, he announced that he would not be returning to international cricket. Throughout his playing career, he remained one of the most influential and significant cricketers in Bangladesh cricket.
Now, he is stepping into a new role by joining the BCB elections. For the time being, Tamim is focusing on understanding the process through which he will participate in the elections. His ultimate aim is to become the president of the board, but the prerequisite is first securing a director’s position. For now, that is his immediate focus.
In an interview, he said: “If you ask whether I will take part in the BCB elections, I can say there is a very good chance. This time, I am running. I have invested in cricket. I am involved with two clubs. So, I will certainly be a councilor.”
In another interview, Tamim added: “What’s happening now is not good at all. Everyone is trying to belittle one another, spreading lies. Some things are true, some are false. The real discussion should be about who can bring fresh ideas, who is most suitable for cricket at this time. Everyone is saying Bangladesh needs to play modern cricket. But it’s not just about the players—decision-makers also need to adopt a modern mindset.”
The BCB, however, has repeatedly maintained that the elections will be held on schedule. Next Monday, an important board meeting will be held in Sylhet, where the final election roadmap is expected to be announced. As the date draws nearer, the electoral heat is steadily rising.
